High Rage
              - James K Burk
Scarface, on his way back to a clan stronghold after assassinating a legate, meets and falls in love with a woman even more ruthless than he.  To win her, he must
reunite an empire and create a kingdom.  His only allies are his wits, his sword, and the power in his scars -- black marks like the taloned finger prints of a demon.

To achieve his goals, he must deal with old enemies, gods of dubious worth, and his own family -- who may be the most dangerous of all.
What Others Have Said About
High Rage

It's a good story with fascinating characters well drawn, good events, good scenes, some of them memorable; a real-feeling world with real goings on; convincing,
primitive politics of connivance and force; some interesting and insightful observations of human nature and relationships; and sorceries and magics that do not at
all come across as conveniences of the author or his characters.  (in fact, his magic is real-seeming enough for me to file his approach for my own use.)

Burk uses details skillfully, more than many much-published authors.  Some scenes and lines are memorable, made so by the protagonist's sense of irony, aided by
the writer's talent for naming people and things.  For a closer, Burk surprised the hell out of me.  The ending was effective and totally unexpected.

author of SOLDIERS, THE REGIMENT, and many more novels and stories.

If you aren't reading James K. Burk's work, you should be.  In HIGH RAGE he has created one of the most original magic systems I've ever seen.  He is truly one
of the most underrated writers of our day.

author of TRANQUILITY,  and BRIDE OF TRANQUILITY

Raw and hard-hitting, James Burk writes a gritty fantasy that you can sink your teeth into and gives you characters who don't wring their hands in distress, but
who face their odds and make tough decisions for  a reason.

author of DRAGON'S TONGUE, WANDERING LARK, and THE CITY UNDER THE BRIDGE.
