Once, the Sea Horse roamed the open Zuiderzee, returning drowning sailors and children to shore. The people called him Saltwarden, keeper of those taken too soon. But as dikes rise, channels narrow, and salt water gives way to lakes and canals, the world that sustained him begins to disappear.
Forced to adapt to waters that no longer know him, the Saltwarden continues answering those in danger, even as gratitude turns to fear and old stories reshape a guardian into the dreaded Bullebak. In a landscape transformed by human hands, he must discover whether a creature born of the sea can still protect those who live beside the water, even when they have forgotten what he truly is.
